Reflection on Inclusivity and Differentiation
One of the things I was most excited about entering the program was learning about inclusive education and how to best help those who need it most. Learning about the variety of strategies there are to help those students who don’t fit inside the binary has been a highlight as I enter my practicums with the goal to be that teacher students can come to. One of my goals when I do finally become a teacher is to hone my skills as I learn more about inclusive education or become involved with a group like SOGI. On a social scale I want my students and even those outside my classroom to feel safe around me as well as like they have a place where they can be free to be weird.
On an academic scale I feel like differentiation works very well with the ideals of inclusivity and the goal of having every student succeed in their own way. In the classroom I have found that even the smallest bit of help like having a student only do half of the intended work can help them feel successful for themselves. I think that students need to feel successful in what they are doing to feel included within the educational setting; even if it is something small students are capable of so much when given the correct accommodations. I actually have accommodations for myself when it comes to academics, and it has helped me succeed in many way that I never thought possible which I want my students to also feel. Working on my skills with differentiation is one of my biggest goals, complimenting my desire to create an inclusive environment, as I enter my career and hone my practice.
